Hilda Phillips Smith, 89, a resident of Woodsfield Nursing and Rehab Center and formerly of Beallsville, died October 22, 2013 at the Center. She was born February 17, 1924 in Powhatan Point, Ohio, a daughter of the late Orville and Laura Hun Smith Phillips. Hilda was a member of the Pleasant Grove Methodist Church until its closing and then became a member of Jerusalem United Methodist Church. She started work at a young age and had been a hard worker all her life. She enjoyed caring for her animals and for many years she raised pigs, chickens, and milk cows. She was united in marriage to Clayton C. Smith on April 26, 1941. Surviving are their five children, Laura (Thomas) Patterson of Roanoke, VA, James (Jeanette) Smith, Sheila (Roy) Wilson, Karen (James) Wheeler all of Jerusalem, and Deneice Brownfield of Columbus; 11 grandchildren, Wesley Patterson of Manitowoc, WI, Christina (Robert) Patterson Humphreys of Brandenburg, KY, Timothy Smith of The Woodlands, TX, Kevin Wilson of Jerusalem, Aubrey (Amanda) Patterson of Roanoke, VA, Jason (Amber) Smith of Wheeling, WV, Jaime (Jesse) Smith Jarrett of Marysville, Dustin (Jani) Wheeler of Jerusalem, Tyler (Megan) Brownfield of Laveen, AZ, Derek Wheeler of Cadiz, Trent Brownfield of Barnesville; nine great grandchildren, Virginia Patterson, Alexandra Smith, Grace Humphreys, Marlee and Mila Smith, Julia and Jameson Jarrett, Emma Wheeler and Addison Brownfield. Also surviving her are three sisters, Edna Ullman, of Rittman, Catherine Glotfelty of Clarington, Wilma Jean Greer, of Martins Ferry; five brothers, Carl "Tom" Phillips, Kenny Phillips and Ray Phillips all of Powhatan Point, Clarence "Jake" Phillips, of Shadyside, and Gary Phillips, of Bellaire. In addition to her parents, Hilda was preceded in death by her husband, Clayton on September 20, 1997; her step-mother, Dorothy Vanness Phillips; brothers Sedrick, Ralph, Virgil, Roger Lee, Larry; a sister Violet Carpenter, also by an infant brother. Visitation will be held Friday, October 25 from 4 PM until 8 PM at the Harper Funeral Home, Beallsville where funeral services will be held Saturday, October 26 at 11 AM with Pastor Jean Cooper officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Grove Cemetery.
